IT'S SHOWTIME!!

Well the time is here and I am so excited!!  I changed up EVERYTHING I have done in past years of competing taking a page out of Erin Stern's book and meditated and visualized success as well as listening to what my body wanted as I went through the weeks and months of training.  I feel in the best shape not only physically but mentally!

Now are there things that I want to work on in the future?  Of course however those were things I learned along the way.  I learned to trust what I felt was right for ME and to move in that direction which opened new doors.  My glutes are really responding as my hip thrusts are now up to 210 pounds (at 48 years. that's right!) so I will continue to focus on glute training to really get them lifted.

Of course, it is all subjective so when I step on stage I realize that some judges will score high and some lower and that is the nature of competing.  The huge part is that I am completely at peace with myself and I don't feel nervous about it at all.  I love, love and love being on stage so that is exciting and I am looking forward to it.  But there is no second guessing or anxiety over anything.  That is a wonderful feeling.  Listen to your own inner voice!  Sometimes it is a whisper and your anxieties can sound like a scream.  Listen to the whisper and hear the truth.

I am off to get my first tan sprayed on and then it's off to a meeting for all competitors.  I will keep you posted!!

Peace

Working towards a goal...

Well here we are at the end of August!  I am so ready for this heat to end and to be able to go back to exercising outside once in a while.  I was able to hit the track last week the day it rained so hard here and that was great.

I am now in preparation for Fitness America in Las Vegas the weekend of November 16 and 17th.  I will compete in Bikini division and maybe Fitness Model although I am still considering that right now and all that it entails.  It's more money, more outfits and more makeup appointments.  It is a wonderfully fun experience AND it is an expensive experience. So I will pray and meditate on the best thing and go from there.

This month I am hitting my glutes hard.  I was not happy with the hamstrings/glutes at last year's show.  That is what we do after each show is decide how we could be better for the next show.  For me that was hamstrings/glutes AND I am changing how I diet down.  Of course a coach is key and for me Jamo Nezzar from JamCore Training. He has fantastic energy and a good eye.  A coach is a great idea for everyone.  I don't care how long you have been training or coaching other people when it comes to your own body an outside eye is essential.  A coach that understands how the body works can keep you calm when you are getting intense at the end and you're exhausted.  I recommend it for everyone and always use one myself.

So back to my glutes story.  I am hitting legs once per week and then later in the week I am attacking the glutes specifically with targeted exercises.  I am only doing HIIT training 2X per week. On those days I am doing the HIIT morning and night.  It is easier mentally on me to power through just 2 days of two a days then 5 or 6 days which I know is coming.  The good thing is that when I get to that time it will be cooler here in Phoenix so I can go to the track or at least be outside.  I love to lift weights! I hate the cardio or HIIT training.  So I am making sure that I get on the diet right away.  Remember!! You cannot out exercise a bad diet.

Okay, I have to get back to work. My students are emailing.  Have a fantastic day everyone and I will keep you posted.

No matter how many times I tell myself to sit down and blog something always takes me to another thing or I am so tired I fall asleep with the computer on my lap.  As usual I am behind and so many cool things have happened that I don't know where to begin.

I will pick up where my last post left off and let you know that I am still with Jamo working hard.  Right now I am getting ready for a photo shoot that is on the 23rd so I am doing 1 hi carb day meaning carbs with first and second meal and than 3 days of lo carb meaning carbs only at meal 1.  Not going to lie....it get's tough.  Between that and the heat here in Phoenix my energy levels go way down.  So Friday I visited my naturopath and got a Vit B shot to help my energy levels.  As the competitions get closer I do an amino acid/vitamin push which is basically an IV of good stuff to help rebuild and get you over the hump.  Monday I start 2/day workouts so it is only going to challenge me more and that is how I choose to see it.  My shows are coming up in October and November.  I will go back to Vegas November 15th for Nationals to redeem myself (I hope anyway).  I think working with Jamo will take me to another level and after Nationals I will need to think about doing any more competitions.  I don't' know for sure now but we will see.

I took my son over to California for 2.5 weeks to go to a tournament with the Dodger scout team and then we went to Stanford for a 3 day camp for graduates of 2014.  He was able to connect with many coaches from different colleges and he had a great showing.  His pop time there was 1.8 sec.  He was happy and it really motivated him to work harder.  He is currently in a camp as ASU for pitchers and catchers and then I will be training him in the off season.

I have almost finished my workout room although I am always checking Craigslist for new and cool stuff for the gym.  I just ordered Cross Symmetry cables for the baseball players I train and I am going to invest in some ropes for training as well. I love the home gym, WOW is it so much easier to get things done and stay out of the heat.  My husband hung a tv in there so now I can watch ESPN while I do my sprints on my bike.  It's small but I like it and it is very me, just a lot of weights around, sandbags, med balls, thera balls, TRX, etc. all old school train functional and get it done type of gym.

School will start back soon so I am now in the process of creating my syllabus for a few classes and redoing my online class for the new text book.  As always I am doing voice work from my house and I have been getting a lot of corporate videos which has been some much needed income.

Well I hope you all are having a great summer and staying cool.  Keep stopping by as I track my journey to my show in October!  Feel free to ask any questions as well.

Take care.

New Year, New Coach

Hi Everyone,

I can't believe it is almost Easter. This year is off to a flying start and it finds me playing catch up on my blogging.  One thing that has kept me distracted is Pinterest  I love that site.  My husband can't believe how much time I spend on it however it draws me in. I have already tried some of the DIY and the recipes on there.

The other big thing that keeps me occupied is baseball!  It is spring and that means I am attending a lot of games. I had a great time teaching yoga to the baseball team at the high school where my son attends.  The boys loved it!  Housecleaning, laundry, and blogging all take a back seat as I am working or attending games.  The good news is that I have a voice booth in my house now so I can get a lot more work completed right here at home.  I love it and I love learning how to edit.

This year I decided to work with a new coach. Jamo Nezzar runs Jamcor Fitness and is fantastic.  When I competed in Fitness America last November I placed in the top 10 which is okay but not in alignment with my goals.  I needed a new set of eyes and a fresh approach and after speaking with Jamo I knew I was in the best hands and am very excited about this year and stepping on stage again.   I am heading to his new gym April 15th to shoot an exercise video and decide on my show dates for this year.

So many exciting things happening and I am going to keep you posted here.  Well off to a baseball game!

Lessons to Learn

Hi All and Happy Holidays!

Well, I made it to Las Vegas for Fitness America Nationals and I came in 7th out of 18 beautiful women.  As always, I learned many things from my time on stage and to that end I have contacted a new coach to help me go to the next level in 2012.  Truly, I had a short time to get ready for Vegas as I returned from PA in July and then began working on my physique.  I learned that I needed to really rest from the stresses of that move and the effects stress has on my overall look.  I was pleasantly surprised by what I was able to achieve however I want to place higher and really look my best.  To that end I have contacted a new coach out of  CA and will begin working with him the beginning of the year.  Now I am resting and going back to 2 times a week of Hot Yoga (which I love) and 3 days of full body workouts.  This will take me through Christmas and by January I will be ready to kick it into gear for competitions in the summer.  Right now I am looking to compete in August here in AZ.

My husband and son, Chris are returning tonight from Las Vegas where they have been playing in a baseball tournament.  They made it to the semi finals and my son pitched a great game.  He threw 98 pitches and had 11 strikeouts.  Next weekend is another tournament and we will be going to a Sun Devil catching camp as well.  Never a dull moment around here.

Have any of you been setting any goals for 2012?  I have!  I love the use of the vision board.  I think it keeps me focused on the goals that I have for myself.  A few of the things for me are: #1 set up a voice home studio, #2 finish setting up home gym, #3 win at least 1 bikini competition the list goes on however you get the idea.

Well I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend!

Peace,
Laura

Designing Spaces

I don't know where the time goes.  I always mean to update this blog and the next thing I know it is a month later and it still is not finished.  So tonight I said "no going to sleep until you blog"  and what is crazy is that I have so much to tell you.

First, I just returned from shooting an episode of Designing Spaces for Lifetime TV.  I had a great time representing MAAX Spas and working with the entire crew.  Although we were sweating shooting outside in West Palm Beach, we did the whole shoot in about 2 hours.  It looks like the show will air for the first time on October 14, 2011 and I will be announcing it on Facebook and Twitter to remind everyone.  So please follow me there to get updates because I am really much better at those sites.
What is I love is meeting new people and having new experiences.  I can't say enough about my host for the show, John.  He is such a pro and so very talented.  Collin the producer and my makeup artist Laura were also fantastic and funny.  We laughed the entire time and cracked jokes.  I hope to work with all of them in the future.

After the shoot I headed to Birmingham, AL to visit my brother and family for a few days.  I got to watch my nieces Kaitlin and Jenna play volleyball for the first time.  I loved being there and watching them play and just hanging around talking.  I got to workout everyday I was there and sometimes twice!

Now that I am home I am teaching for Mesa Community College online, which I love.  It gives me freedom to continue to audition and work and more time to be a mom.  I am booked for next Tuesday for 3 hours of voice for a new company in the Valley.  I am looking forward to that.

Of course the big thing for me is that I am now 10 weeks out for Fitness America Nationals in Las Vegas.  It is November 18-19 and I am working towards getting ready.  The dieting is the big thing for me and as we all know as we age it gets harder to keep the muscle and lose the fat.  Today I headed to the track to run bleachers and jump bleachers, anything to work the butt!  For those of you who have never competed you should do it at least once.  It is so much fun on stage and the women are great.  I have met some fantastic ladies who are now friends.  So look for me in Vegas.   I also have to drive my son to Vegas for a baseball tournament and that takes a lot of planning to find some place to workout and pack all of my food.

Well I think that is all for today.  I hope all of you had an enjoyable summer.  I am looking forward to Fall and cooler temperatures.

Peace,
Laura

Getting Older

Well yesterday my son packed up, all by himself and went to San Diego with a friend for the week.  It was such a premonition of what is to come when I watched all 6 feet of him walk out the door without looking back once!  I don't remember getting this old and to think he will be 15 in a few short months is frightening.

It really puts all things in perspective for me and how FAST time goes by. Why not enjoy more and worry less?  Seems like such an easy and great thing to do but so hard at the same time.  I worry he will be okay but he promised to TEXT me. Thanks goodness for the cellphone! And I have already text him and he isn't even there yet.  Going to be a long week.

Also, as a female we worry about getting older and the constant battle.  I thank my stars that I started working out at a young age.  To me although granted it is harder to hold them muscle I workout as a habit and form of sanity and not a "guilt" thing.  It is in my DNA for sure and I know that has helped me whether the storms of life.  As I have a teenage now, I will need the extra oomph to keep going and exercise and eating a clean diet ( most of the time) has been the prescription to a great quality of life.

I hope all of you take each day as a gift and appreciate all of those in your life.  I hope you also appreciate this body that is also a gift.  Don't compare it to anyone else's just play in the uniform given.  Make the most of what you have and take care of yourself.  Take it from me and 25 years of experience it will help you in the years to come.

Have a fantastic day.
peace
Laura
